SHYNESS
Susie Scott, Research Associate in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University, spent three years collecting personal stories and accounts of people who see themselves as shy, exploring the social context in which this feeling arises, how it affects our interaction with others, and the way that cultural norms and values shape our perceptions of 'shy' behaviour.
Laurie Taylor talks to Susie Scott about her research, which suggests that we should stop stigmatising the shy, and think of it as a social phenomenon rather than a personality trait.
THE COMPANY OF STRANGERS – A NATURAL HISTORY OF ECONOMIC LIFE
Laurie Taylor is joined by the economist Professor Paul Seabright to unpick the extraordinary division of labour.
Only 10,000 years ago humans hunted in bands, and were intensely suspicious of strangers.Ìý Yet now we live and work amid strangers, daily entrusting our lives to millions of individuals we do not know.Ìý
Paul Seabright talks about what has made this possible, and asks whether humanity’s capacity for cooperation has, surprisingly, led to us living in a more dangerous world than ever before.
