Capital Cities:
In one recent sample poll of British electors more than three quarters felt London was too dominant in the political, economic and cultural life of the country.Ìý But when the suggestion was put to them that one way of solving the problem would be to move the seat of Government elsewhere, almost two thirds vetoed the idea. Capital cities though, come in many shapes and forms.Ìý Many countries, such as Brazil, the Netherlands and the United States of America, work quite happily with two, a political Capital and a cultural Capital.Ìý So what is a Capital city for and does it necessarily have to have global status?Ìý Laurie Taylor discusses Capital Cities with , Professor in the urban planning programme at UCLA and Paul Barker, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Community Studies, Bethnal Green in London, who wrote the cover story of the December issue of the monthly magazine Prospect about moving the capital city of England to the North.
Russian Youth:
Cultural globalisation and what Russians think of it.Ìý In pre-Glasnost days, Western culture was seen as a symbol of opposition to the Soviet system and something to be aspired to.Ìý , Director of the Centre for Russian and East European Studies at Birmingham University, studied youth culture in Moscow in the late eighties and then, following the recent influx of Western films, clothes and music, did a comparative study in the late nineties.Ìý Russian youth it appears are as alternative as ever and determined to have the best of more worlds than one.
