The recent death of Professor Sir Raymond Firth aged 100, the last of the great founders of modern social anthropology has brought the science into sharp focus. Today there are no more tribes hidden away in deepest darkest Peru: the social anthropologist is often studying much closer to home, such as in the stock markets, biotechnology or tracking the process of democracy.
