MONEY
Laurie Taylor meets Professor , a sociologist whose interest in Sustainability and Economic Democracy has led her to the view that money, rather than serving society, now dominates it to an unhealthy extent.
Via baby-sitting circles and a room full of spinning plates, Mary Mellor takes Laurie on a tour of the life and times of money, from exchange tokens to electronic credit and asks when did society become servant to its own invention?
FOOTBALL AND IDENTITY
Faith, football and the future of Scotland, in recent years, identity issues have leapt to the fore and the role they play in one historic sporting rivalry makes for an intriguing conundrum.
In global terms, Scottish football means only two teams, Glasgow Celtic and Glasgow Rangers, their spectacular rivalry and flag-waving supporters a gift to marketing men and television schedulers alike.
While both sets of clubs and supporters like to claim their rivalry is primarily a recreational pursuit, it has frequently been portrayed by independent commentators as Scotland’s national shame, a monument to the enduring grip of bigotry and a perpetuator of sectarian division and violence.
Others see it as merely providing another opportunity for football’s hooligan element at worst while at best it has provided a historical outlet for feelings which might otherwise have expressed themselves in dangerous politics.
Laurie Taylor talks the rights, wrongs and imponderables of identity formation with Sports Sociologist, Professor and politics lecturer, Dr .
