ANN OAKLEY - Feminism
When sociologist Ann Oakley wrote Sex, Gender and Society, and The Politics of Housework in the seventies, the idea that certain ingrained attitudes in society were difficult to challenge, was revolutionary. Nowadays observations about sexism, racism and other forms of bias are commonplace.
Laurie Taylor is joined by Angela McRobbie, Professor of Communications, Goldsmiths College and Ann Oakley, Professor of Sociology and Social Policy at the Institute of Education, University of London to assess her work and discuss the contemporary backlash against feminism.
LUST - Changing sexual behaviour in the UK
To mark their Social Sciences Week, the ESRC has published a new report on changes in sexual behaviour in the UK.
It looks at issues such as teenage pregnancy, sex before marriage and the rise of sexually transmitted infections suggesting that attitudes towards sexual behaviour are now more relaxed.
The report implies that there is a convergence in the sexual behaviour of men and women thus becoming more equal. However differences remain, particularly in the ways in which men and women experience their first sexual encounter. Laurie Taylor talks to Kaye Wellings, Professor of Sexual and Reproductive Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and author of Lust: Changing sexual behaviour in the UK.
