Horse racing
Rebecca Cassidy, anthropologist and horse lover, has undertaken an ethnographical study of Newmarket, the headquarters of British Flat Racing. It is a town with a unique class system in which human and horse is conflated – the dynastic blood lines of both species are all that really counts in the business of producing fast thoroughbreds. In many ways a secret society, it was Rebecca’s Irish ancestry which aided her acceptance into this extraordinary monoculture and has allowed her to produce unique insights into the racing world.
Gurrrl Power
Pre-teenage girls nowadays enjoy many billions of pounds-worth of consumer power. Laurie Taylor hears from two sociologists about the extent to which the identity of tweenagers (as they’re known in the market place) is being shaped by their love of shopping. Laurie discusses the issues with Rachel Russell, lecturer in Sociology, Glasgow Caledonian University: Division of Sociology and Social Policy and Angela McRobbie, professor of Communications, Goldsmith's, and author of books on girls and popular cultures.
