The social and psychological ingredients which make a smoker a Smoker are an aspect of tobacco addiction which nicotine patches don’t reach.
Laurie Taylor hears tales of mothers packing their children’s satchels with a pipe as well as an apple, of the pamphlets written against tobacco-drinkers and of the subsequent emergence of a strict smoking etiquette and explores with , Lecturer in the at the University of Leicester and author of Learning to Smoke, the history of the weed and its continuing role in the creation of individual identity.

This year sees the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Association of International Conference Interpreters – AIIC, an elite professional body which has largely defined its own role as diplomacy’s critical link. But there’s another group of interpreters, those who work in our courts and our social services, whose role is rather more ambiguous than that of their more glamorous international counterparts.
