DIETS AND DIETING
For centuries, food has been a significant part of daily ritual. From religious rites, like fasting and transubstantiation, to the modern day weight watching where some foods are deemed sinful, dieting has demanded strict obedience and pious dedication.
Laurie Taylor is joined by Sander L Gilman, Professor of the Arts and Sciences at Emory University, Atlanta, whose latest research looks at the cultural history of dieting and finds out why we're so obsessed with food.
THE MODERN CUBICLE
Showers, public swimming pools, baths and toilets are part of the fabric of everyday life. They have their origin in the 19th century, and were founded on the principles of engendering respect, normality and civility. However they have subsequently been appropriated for all sorts of unintended (deviant) behaviour such as drug use and cottaging.
Laurie Taylor speaks to Tom Crook, Lecturer in Modern British History at Oxford Brookes University, about his latest research which examines the power, privacy and pleasure of the modern cubicle.
