GAY, LESBIAN AND BI-SEXUAL MUSLIMS
Non-heterosexuality is strictly censored in Islamic religious texts but what happens to gay, lesbian and bi-sexual Muslims who acknowledge the importance of Islam in their lives?
This year the Sociological Review published an article by Andrew Yip called Negotiating Space with Family and Kin in Identity Construction: the Narratives of Non-heterosexual Muslims. Andrew Yip's project is an exploratory study of the life circumstances and lived experiences of female and male non-heterosexual Muslims of Asian descent, as a sexual minority within an ethnic minority.
Laurie Taylor talks to Dr Andrew Yip, reader in Sociology at Nottingham Trent University, about his project that examines how some gay, lesbian and bi-sexual Muslims have bridged the gap between their sexuality and their Muslim culture and beliefs.
H.L.A. HART (1907 - 1992) - LEGAL PHILOSOPHER
In his 1961 book The Concept of Law, H.L.A Hart argued that in the interests of the overriding value of liberty, the state should only intervene to curtail people's freedom in order to prevent them causing harm to others. But how far can this principle of the law be applied post September 11th when concern is focused on risk and containing it rather than individual liberties?
Laurie Taylor is joined by Professor Nicola Lacey, author of a new book A Life Of HLA Hart: The Nightmare and the Noble Dream and Helena Kennedy QCÌýto discuss the ways in which Hart's legal philosophy of the 'harm' principle shaped laws such as the abolition of capital punishment, the decriminalisation of abortion and homosexuality, and the ending of censorship, and how that philosophy stands up in today's political climate.
