UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL SOCIOLOGY DEPARTMENT
In 1905 the Department of Social Science was opened at the University of Liverpool.Ìý It evolved from a campaign led by a group of intellectual and civic leaders, two key leaders being Eleanor Rathbone and Elizabeth Macadam.
The work undertaken by Rathbone and Macadam, and the development of the department, signified a change in the way social work was to be perceived.Ìý
Initially, it was the preserve of charitable organisations but soon under the guidance of these two formidable characters it became a professional discipline that helped counter poverty and destitution in the city.
Laurie Taylor talks to David Bingham about the centenary of teaching and researching social work at the University of Liverpool.
THE PURCHASE OF INTIMACY
In her new book The Purchase of Intimacy Professor Viviana Zelizer examines the interplay between monetary transfers and different sorts of social relations.
Laurie Taylor is joined by Viviana Zelizer , Professor of Sociology at Princeton and Professor Jan Pahl , School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research, University of Kent to discuss why we are so wedded to the belief that intimacy and economics should remain in separate spheres when all evidence points to the fact that we use economic activity to create and maintain intimate ties to others.
