Maps
Laurie Taylor is joined by Peter Barber, Head of Maps at the British Library.Ìý Peter explains what maps can tell us about our social, political and economic pasts and evokes memories of the not-so-long-ago world when Britons were confident of their absolute greatness whilst Canada was a mixture of greatness, mediocrity and cannibals.
Laurie also invites an unlikely trio of cartographers - , Professor of sociology and Social Policy at the Institute of Education, University of London and Director of the Social Science Research Unit, Professorial Research Fellow at Queen Mary College in London and , Professor of Philosophy at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia to imagine how atlases could and should change to reflect new realities. The North Pole, patriarchal thought, morality and sin will all be offered for consideration.Ìý But the most useful chart of all - the medieval map complete with the label 'Here Be Dragons'- could turn out to be one consigned to the dustbin of history .
