Martin got permission to follow one police force in the South-east of England as it worked its way through a number of contrasting cases.Ìý Interested in the social processes involved, MartinÌýexplored the different ways the police make sense of the nature of the crime they are investigating by creating stories around them, stories which mirror different murder archetypes and are astonishingly detailed even when it was apparently obvious who-dunit.

Can Culture save us?Ìý In 2008 Liverpool will be the first British city since Glasgow to hold the title of European Capital of Culture.Ìý Hopes ride high on the perception, popular amongst local authorities up and down the land, that like Glasgow before it, cleaning up its best buildings, creating some exciting spaces and putting together an arts programme will result in successful urban revival on Merseyside.
Meanwhile critics of the concept of culture-led regeneration continue to denounce it as froth on a cappuccino, insubstantial and incapable of making a real impact on the lives of local people.
Laurie Taylor talks to Anna Minton, journalist and writer and , Research Fellow in who have been investigating the roots of Britain’s strong emotional attachment to a concept which offers interesting possibilities but is underpinned by little in the way of substantive research.
