Richard McMahon
Keyboard Adjudicator - Category Final
Richard McMahon has led the Keyboard Department of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, since 1996.
Known internationally as a teacher and pianist, his first studies were with Ella Pounder in Middlesbrough before continuing in London at the Royal Academy of Music with Gordon Green. Awarded the prestigious Recital Diploma, as well as a BMus degree, he won various scholarships to fund further study in Paris with Vlado Perlemuter. He used this time to make a close study of the works of Chopin, Ravel and other French repertoire.
His solo career began at this time, with successful London debuts and concerts throughout the UK. His many recordings for the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ have been wide ranging including rarities and first performances as well as mainstream repertoire.
He also worked with the pianists Anne Shasby and more recently Martin Jones in repertoire for piano duo. The first duo found success immediately after their Wigmore Hall and South Bank debuts with TV, Henry Wood Promenade concerts, appearances at all the major London venues and many broadcasts for well over a decade. In this time they performed and recorded almost the entire repertoire for two pianists. The more recent partnership with Martin Jones has led to further recordings for two pianos and over a long career Richard has worked with many other distinguished instrumentalists and singers.
