7 celebs who have spoken out about their sobriety

Demi Lovato’s brave thankyou message to her fans

Demi sent an honest and heartfelt thankyou to her loyal fans.

She's often bravely spoken out about her struggles with addiction and now has shared some very good news with her fans: she's five years sober.

Posting on Instagram, Demi wrote, "So grateful. It's been quite the journey. So many ups and downs. So many times I wanted to relapse but sat on my hands and begged God to relieve the obsession.

"I'm so proud of myself but I couldn't have done it without my higher power (God), my family, friends, and everyone else who supported me. Feeling humbled and joyful today. Thank you guys for sticking by my side and believing in me."

Congratulations to Demi and these other seven stars who have spoken out about their sobriety.

Daniel Radcliffe

Even Harry Potter is not immune to addiction, with Daniel Radcliffe giving up alcohol after filming The Deathly Hallows – Part 2, though he admits to a relapse in 2013. Speaking to the Telegraph in July 2016, Dan said he hadn’t touched a drop in three years, because “I change when I’m drunk. I’m one of those people who changes.

“There is something in any person who drinks in a way that’s clearly not good for them, something that is attracted to that chaos.”

Zac Efron

The High School Musical star entered rehab in 2013, where he was treated for alcohol and drug addiction, and is now clean and sober. In 2014, he opened up to the Hollywood Reporter about attending Alcoholics Anonymous, saying, “I just started going. And I think it's changed my life. I'm much more comfortable in my own skin. Things are so much easier now. It's a never-ending struggle.”

Then, in 2016, Zac gave Elle an update on how he’s changed his life for the better. “What I found is structure. That led me to a balance of opposites: You get out of life what you put in. There was a moment when my morning routine was, like, get up and Google yourself. But that stopped, dramatically and instantly, probably three years ago. I realised that viewing yourself through other people's pictures is not living your own life.”

“It’s been nine years since my last drink,” told GQ in 2012. “That’s really why I got sent to boarding school aged 14 — to get sober.”

Lana’s Born To Die album was largely influenced by her former addiction, with her admitting, “When I write about the thing that I’ve lost I feel like I’m writing about alcohol because that was the first love of my life. Sure, there have been people, but it’s really alcohol.”

Bradley Cooper

Despite starring in The Hangover in 2009, Bradley Cooper has actually been sober since 2005, following addictions to alcohol and painkillers. “If I continued it, I was really going to sabotage my whole life,” he told GQ in 2013.

Kelly Osbourne

In an interview with Mail On Sunday in 2014, Kelly – who has been to rehab four times – opened up about putting her party days behind her and living the quiet life.

“I have one or two glasses of champagne every now and then. I don’t tell people I’m sober because I do have the occasional drink but I never take drugs. I don’t mess around. When I think about how much my life has changed for the better and all the things that I’ve overcome, what is the point in going back to that?”

In an interview with Men’s Journal, described his road to recovery, and how exercise helped him overcome addictions to alcohol and drugs.

“In 2007, I overdosed on pills, and I went into the hospital. I was close to 230 pounds. I'm not sure how I got so big, but I have ideas. The coating on the Vicodin and the Valium I'd been taking for years leaves a hole in your stomach, so to avoid a stomach ache, I was constantly eating — and eating badly.

“When I got out of rehab, I needed to lose weight, but I also needed to figure out a way to function sober. Unless I was blitzed out of my mind, I had trouble sleeping. So I started running. It gave me a natural endorphin high, but it also helped me sleep, so it was perfect.”

After feeling like she was going to burn out at the end of her 20s, told Harper’s Bazaar in 2016 that she is now sober.

"I'd been really self-destructive for a while, and I really didn't want to keep breaking things - whether it was relationships or physical stuff,” she explained. “Not drinking was such a healing process that I thought, ‘Let's just keep going with this’. And what I've learned is that I'm naturally a sensitive, open person who's just super-high on life without any drink or drugs.”
