Simple tips on managing pressure and stress

All week, we'll be running features and specials about pressure and stress and on Wednesday night Radio 1's will be helping out with exam stress as Spring gets underway and exam season approaches.
Radio 1's resident expert, Dr Radha, dropped into Grimmy's show to share simple tips to help all of all us deal with the pressures in our own lives. Here's what she had to say.
You may be stressing yourself out for no reason
"We're looking at exam stress, exam pressure - but also generally school pressures," she told Nick.

"All those things we take from our parents, our teachers but mainly from ourselves, honestly a lot of the time we are our own worst enemies when it comes to wanting to be perfect, wanting to achieve everything. We're looking at how we can make that a little bit better."
And if you've been struggling recently then there's a good chance you've been suffering from stress too.
"Stress is when pressure gets a bit too much for us and we get totally overwhelmed, we feel like we can't cope," she explained.
"You can get headaches, you can get muscle tension, you can feel very tired. It's a real thing and it's something we all experience at some point."

Don't panic
Even Nick Grimshaw struggles with 'the fear' on Sunday nights and Dr Radha says that feeling apprehensive before the start of a new week is natural and very common.

"I definitely remember from school days that feeling of 'what's going to happen this week', 'will I be able to manage it all', 'I haven't done anything', 'how am I going to get organised'," she said.
"But when it starts, it's alright isn't it."
She says overthinking can lead to panic, which in turn can result in stress about problems that may not exist.
"We make everything so much worse in our minds than it actually is," she told Nick.
"Part of dealing with pressure and stress is checking in on your own thoughts and what you're thinking. Is this actually true, is it real?
"We all do that and our brains end up going absolutely wild until we're getting to a point where everything feels out of control."

Talk to someone about what you're going through
When you're stressed out, it's easy to think you're the only person in the world who's struggling.
We can all help each other to learn to make things better
But you're not.
"Just take a minute to ground yourself, be aware of what you're thinking, chat to someone about how you're feeling - they're all really good things to do," said Radha.
You're like 'hang on a minute; I thought it was just me'. I hear that a lot in my surgery.
"There's nothing wrong with you, it's totally human. We all go through these things but we can all help each other to learn to make things better."

Spend time with your pets (no really)
On Tuesday 7 March, Radio 1's Live Lounge will have some very special visitors - and they won't be performing any music.

We'll be live-streaming loads of cute puppies and there is scientific evidence that pets can help you deal with pressure and stress.
"There is science behind this. If you have an animal or pet, then your levels of stress are shown to be lower," said Radha.
"Your risk of getting depression or low mood is lower, so there is a big up to relaxing with your animals or pets."
