COD
In the early 1990s the mighty cod, as local fisherman Bill Broderick calls it, disappeared from the Grand Banks off Newfoundland. After fifteen years it has not returned.
If the newspaper headlines are to be believed we are in danger of the same thing happening in the North Sea, but are those just scare stories?
In this week's Nature, Grant Sonnex meets that iconic fish from the British menu. He tries to find the real story behind the headlines and discover whether the situation is as bad as we are led to believe.
Along the way he encounters the fish itself at The Deep in Hull and in a tank at CEFAS, the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science.
Grant learns how the fish lives and how it behaves and even hears the voice of Cod.
He also hears from the East of England Fish Producers Association in Grimsby to hear the UK fishermens experience, and meets Scientists from CEFAS who are trying to assess the cod population and advise on preserving the stocks.
Grant also questions the sensational reports issued by the Marine Conservation Society and finds that all interested parties are now working together to preserve the fish. |
