Re-Wilding
Ìý
In Nature this week, Paul Evans visits the conservation landscapes of the future.
Re-wilding is a term that originated from the USA.Ìý It describes the process of allowing tracts of land to return to their natural states...or as natural as they can be.
In the United Kingdom, much of our nature conservation to date has been on a very small-scale.Ìý Some regard it as a last-ditch attempt to save a fragment of valuable habitat.
Now, interested landowners are allowing larger landscapes to breathe and ecosystems to develop.
Paul visits two such landscapes: the RSPB's Lakenheath Fen in East Anglia, and Wild Ennerdale in Cumbria where three landowners are allowing parts of a beautiful Lake District valley to be shaped by natural events.
RegardlessÌýof how wild these new large areas are, they need to be managed in our modern world.
Could herds of conservation grazing cattle be a bigger part of our future landscapes? And will their natural predators, such as bears or wolves ever be allowed to return?
