It was who was first in Ambridge to hire Philip. He repaired the hunt kennels after part of its roof collapsed.

Friendly and hard-working, Philip was popular in Ambridge - though Eddie felt like he lost out on a lot of work to this incomer who ran a building business with his son Gavin. Sharing a keen interest in birds and wildlife, love blossomed between Philip and Kirsty and the couple moved were among the first to live on the Beechwood Estate.

An explosion at Grey Gables almost revealed Philip's dark secret. With coercion and deceit he managed to maintain his facade until Gavin fled and Kirsty, by now his wife, challenged him. She worked out he had been using slave labour and forced him to hand himself into the police. Despite being found guilty, Philip remained adamant that he'd done nothing wrong. Kirsty divorced Philip and has nothing more to do with him. He's currently serving a prison sentence for his crime.

Initially he seemed a jolly affable chap. A keen huntsman and bird-watcher his love of the countryside saw him make considerable strides in joining the Ambridge community. Always ready to lend an understanding ear to people's worries and problems, several folk have taken him into their confidence. Quite the agony uncle!!

Three years on, it turns out Philip is a wolf in sheep's clothing. As an actor, such a complex journey is a gift. People’s complexities and frailties are always a challenge. Philip genuinely adores Kirsty, but constantly lies to her. He loves Gavin, but is coercive and demeaning. He truly believes he’s done an honourable thing in taking Blake, Kenzie and Jordan off the streets, but is contemptuous in his references to them. He’s constantly battling these contradictions.

The loyalty he’s displayed to people he’s helped and supported, he expects to be returned and refuses, or is unable to quantify any wrong-doing on his part. I don’t think he’s evil but he’s a deeply flawed human being.

His storyline is a very important one and I’m glad the heinous practise of modern-day slavery has been highlighted – in particular, how a seemingly good man can operate this way, hiding in plain sight and deceiving such a close-knit community.

I first made an appearance in The Archers back in 1987, playing a bogus removal man who conned Mrs Antrobus out of some antique chairs.

Prior to being Philip Moss, my last appearance was back in 2007, as DS Collins, the arresting officer in the Kathy Perks rape case.

In between I've been heard as a policeman investigating a runaway Aldridge; an unsavoury debt-collector who gave Eddie Grundy a hard time over the unpaid hire of a hedge-trimmer; an RSPCA inspector called Allan who drove through France with Elizabeth in pursuit of veal trucks and on one occasion, I even supplied the panting sounds for Jack Woolley's dog Captain!

Andy is a long-time cast member of the London production of the musical Wicked in which he plays the Wizard. Other recent theatre credits include: Grandpa Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (UK/Ireland tour) and Monsieur Firmin in The Phantom of the Opera (UK/Ireland tour and West End).

Andy's film credits include Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves, Much Ado About Nothing, Soul Music and Wyrd Sisters. And on radio, Andy has recorded over 100 plays and readings.
