Higher PE - Mental scenario – example answers

Anxiety (negative)

  • The pupil struggles to control their anxiety before a big tennis match, such as a school final.
  • This leads to them doubting their ability and having lots of negative thoughts before stepping on court.
  • This results in them playing safe at the start of the game and letting their opponent dictate and win rallies.

Concentration (positive)

  • The pupil maintains their concentration when serving in badminton.
  • This leads to them focusing on the sub-routines of their high serve and blocking out distractions such as the noise coming from other courts.
  • This results in the pupil making good contact and hitting an accurate serve to win a point.

Mental toughness (sometimes positive/negative)

  • On some occasions, the pupil can be mentally tough, such as when they are tiring in the last minutes of a basketball match.
  • This leads to them persevering through the pain coming from their tired legs and chasing after the player they are marking.
  • This results in them staying with this player and intercepting passes played to them.

Decison making (sometimes positive/negative)

  • On some occasions, the pupil makes poor decisions when in a two versus one attacking situation in handball.
  • This leads to them deciding to try and dribble past their opponent, despite their teammate being in a space closer to the goal.
  • This results in them being tackled and losing the scoring opportunity.
