Higher PE - Physical scenario – example answers

Weeks 1-3 (positive)

  • In the first three weeks of the development plan, the pupil makes good progress.
  • This could be because they have progressed the intensity of each session.
  • This means they are working in a higher heart rate zone which will develop the ability of the heart and lungs to work more efficiently and develop their CRE.

Week 4 (plateau)

  • By week four, the performer has hit a plateau and may have picked up an injury.
  • This means they would have missed one week of training which saw their CRE levels level off as they have not done any training to improve their fitness levels.

Week 5 (negative)

  • By week five, their CRE has started to decrease.
  • This could be because they have rushed back too soon without lowering the intensity of their sessions.
  • This means they would have been working at an unrealistic level which could have led to them giving up during the session and not attending training that week.

Weeks 6-7 (positive)

  • In the sixth and seventh weeks, the pupil has started to make progress again. This could be because they have been monitored and received feedback from their coach and reduced the level of their short-term goals to make them more realistic.
  • This means the performer is now giving their all in sessions and has gradually increased the duration of the sessions in line with their capabilities.
  • This may have led to their heart and lungs gradually working for longer which would explain why their aerobic endurance has started to increase again.
