The Runes
The Runes
The lads take a break from rehearsals
The Runes began life as a covers band (boo-hiss) in the spring of 2003 but by the summer had decided to take the brave step of going original.

What do you think of their efforts?
Listen: Sargeant Stinge (Real, 56k, 3'04")
Listen: Oh! (Real, 56k, 2'56")
Listen: Beautiful (Real, 56k, 3'34")

"Beautiful" has been The Runes signature tune for some time now but it's great to hear them developing their sound with their two latest tracks. They haven't abandoned their funk-rock beginning, but they've moved forward with a more contemporary style.
The band are all mates from high school and the line-up consists of:

Ollie Croome - Vocals
Will Kricka - Guitar
Benny Brooke - Bass
Tom Brown - Drums

They've played a string of successful gigs including coming second in the Colchester Sixth Form Battle of the Bands and numerous performances around East Anglia.

They're a four piece band who all hail from the mighty village of Holbrook (oh and Shotley, big it up for the massive!). They have been busy writing and performing live over the past few months and have begun to refine their sound in an attempt to really fulfill their aspirations. The first two tracks on this page are from their latest EP recorded at the end of October 2005.

Check out a live review of in Bury St Edmunds.

Harry, Rune Land
Hi Guys Really enjoyed seeing you at the Park on Sunday after not seeing you for a while. One thing i will say is that if you "want it badly enough" you could have it. If this means scraping money from under the sofa cushion, selling drugs on the street or even Oli selling his body then so be. I remember a band called "stereophonics" who i saw in there home town about a yr before they made it big, they were poor and tired of travelling around playing to dive pubs every night but they lived the dream and it happened. Some make it some don't, but usually the ones that want it badly enough and have the talent will prevail. Anyway enough of that I hope you continue to write those crazy tunes and believe in yourselfs more. I for one damn well know you were better than Dirty Pretty Things on Friday night so thats a start! Keep in touch with me on harry@glecorecruitment.co.uk I must take you for a beer or 10 Much Love H

Yo yo yo fella's. Having been privalliged enough to see the progression of the runes from the days of 'Mayb Slinky' until the current day, i often feel it necessary to say 'You guys are awsome!!!' Hope all goes well for you, and now you are reunited from Benny and Will's world tour lets hope you get the fame and accalaid u deserve. From your high school buddy, Leeroy.

can't see what all the fuss is about, I don't think the blind poets song is all that good. Gimme the runes boys anyday. looking forward to your forthcoming gigs, missed you darlings!

Baldy Kev, Peterlee
Git yoursen sum haircuts n stop smookin tabs n I mite consider yers for our Chers 18th. Me mates seen ya doon ipswich docks when he woz doing a job on them new canny apartments doon there. He says you was a bonny band and ya mite come cheap but you were a bit scruffy. let us know lads.

Ben Drury, Sheffield
It may be bEEter Steve, but that is to be expected. It is a fact that you're other senses are enhanced when one is lost, The Blind Poets may be blind but it must be their "song writing" sense that has been increased. Unfortunately, The Runes have all their senses intact. They also have global acclaim.

Steve Mann, Ipswich
The blind Poets do a song called Envy and it is a lot beeter than your song of the same name!

Bev, barham

dave
well freakin said eg. tom, ipswich, best comment for months. i would quite like to marry you.

e.g. Tom, Ipswich
Despite what many others around Ipswich say, i hope you carry on when which ever two of you are away, return. You are without doubt the best unsigned band around this area. Yes you are very fortunate to have such a marketable image, and thats the only reason you get stick from the other, less talented, less easy on the eye bands that critiscise you for being good. Ignore those that try to hold you back, i reckon you've got what it takes and your music is good at the mo, the most important thing that you do have is potential! Make sure you all work hard to realise it and you could make it!

the crew shotpen
benjamin and co - happy hogmannay and strut your funky stuff down at the kazba you rock guys - oh and will what about yer vans man - ditch em theyz stiltonfied weez missin you like donkey misses carrot

You guys were awesome at Rosie's Party, stayed in the tent all the time you were playing cos I just couldn't get away. Got the album and really hope to see you again. Heh, you once dedicated a song to me at Fayes party as I was really drunk and kept shouting at you guys to get naked and take your shirts off. Heh, I was wasted...

Daniel Harvey, Ipswich
Cheers Ollie. Say a big hello back to your dad from me. His dead-pan sense of humour used to make geography lessons significantly more bearable! Hope to see you at another gig sometime soon.

ollie rune
hi dan! thanks for the comment pops says a big hello!

Daniel Harvey , Ipswich
Saw you at The Plough last Saturday and you were brilliant. One of the best bands I've seen in Ipswich. Oliver Croome..... any relation to Richard Croome, the legendary teacher from Chantry?

grub - hitchinbrook
you guys are washed up has beans so take a sabbatical hang up yer tanglewood and give younger bands like phil legett and the scabs a chance - rock on old timers.regards grub

Tom
To be honest its not at all suprising 'James', as we're not actually a Red Hot Chili Peppers cover band - no wonder we're not very good at it. If you are wanting a Chilis cover band though i think there's one going around as 'The Red Not Chili Peppers' so look them up. Hope this helps, always glad to be of service to such a lovely individual as yourself.

james ipswich
you guys are the worst red hot chilli peppers tribute band ever, just give it up

simon

Tash, Whitton
U boyz r the best ting since sliced bread. The Plough iz gonna b a sell out as me and my girlfrendz wanna feel some Rune rocks.

hi kezia by motor vehicle go to holbook and turn left opp compasses follow the road to harkstead via lower holbrook - you cant miss the enchanting hotelry the home of british lagerism and general tom foolery dd for the r...

Ben, Sheffield
Alright kids. It's my 21st on the 22nd October, i'd like you to attend as you are dirty layabouts with nothing to do. Two nights in the glorious Sheffield on the 20th and 21st (with free floor space in my house) combined with a jubilant celebration in Ipswich on the 22nd, combined with a "Goodbye, you're off to Australia" type thing for my brother. Get there, and organise a gig. Orders.

Tom
Also, forgot to mention, Thanks Annalise for the picture,i got a copy of it and its really good. Thank You!

Tom
Yeah i do have a girlfriend. There might be directions on the website. If not just go to Holbrook (from Ipswich direction) and turn left just after the Compasses. Stay on this road and you'll see the Bakers eventually, bout 10 mins of winding roads.

kezia
hey again boys, tom i'm still thinking about you! and i've heard you guys have a gig at the bakers could someone give me some directions cos i really want to cum ;)

mark-hadleigh
hi guys remember me from the grapes gig,can i have a cd this sat at the bakers ,is harkstead near holbrook i vaguely remeber where the village hall is ? anyway let me know, look forward to it.

kizzie, brighton
great to see the black mountains on top- an original band with a great sound- of course no one is more original than your goodselves and there lies the rub- your too original you need to sound more like someone else to impress the 'public'- someone out there is missing the point.

miranda- boxford
just love your long dark locks benny you can be my bobby brown anytime , you can kiss my h...... fancy a bit of slap and octave at the pough.....

Kezia
Hey,this may sound wierd and stalkerish but...Tom are you single? cos you are just too cute!!! i saw you play at the c&p but i was too shy to come over! next time maybe... i'll be at the ploughxx you guys have a really individual sound, love it.

Ali & Kat x
Was good to see u at the Wheatsheaf. U were great. Unfortunately had 2 leave early, but will definitely c u at the Plough. Hey, have u ever thought of playing in Hadleigh?! There's the George or the Cock Inn (George is probably nicer though). Hadleigh's in need of livening up! If u r interested perhaps we can arrange something 4 u! Once again, u were awesome! x

kp -oval
we had some lucky breaks but hey we won and stuffed the aussies- big fred sends his best wishes for global domination

cathy colchester
