Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms 2010: the season at a glance

  • Huge celebratory opening weekend features Mahler's Symphony of a Thousand, Wagner's The Mastersingers and Verdi's Simon Boccanegra.
  • Tribute to Proms founder-conductor Henry Wood includes a day of celebrations and a season designed to reflect his spirit of musical adventure.
  • Two Last Nights of the Proms for the first time with a free recreation of the Last Night of the Proms from 1910.
  • Thirty-one major new commissions and premieres, including 14 Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ commissions and 17 new works from British composers, more than double in any recent decade.
  • The first complete Beethoven piano concerto cycle at the Proms is undertaken by Paul Lewis. The tradition of the Beethoven Night also returns.
  • Broadway comes to the Proms with starry celebrations for both Stephen Sondheim and the work of Rodgers and Hammerstein.
  • Major anniversary celebrations include Mahler, Schumann and Chopin, as well as birthdays for British composers George Benjamin (50), Mark- Anthony Turnage (50) and James Dillon (60).
  • Focuses on the music of Parry and Scriabin, and a day devoted to J.S. Bach.
  • The 400th anniversary of Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 brings a Venice strand to the season.
  • Proms Saturday Matinees return and include a theme of today's composers responding to music of the past.
  • The Doctor Who Prom is back and features the new Time Lord, Matt Smith; plus a dedicated Children's Prom on August Bank Holiday Monday.
  • Maria JoΓ£o Pires makes a welcome return after more than 10 years, and PlΓ΅cido Domingo is back for only his second Prom.
  • Proms debuts for jazz star Jamie Cullum, violinist Nicola Benedetti, rising young conductor Robin Ticciati and the legendary band Penguin Cafe.
  • Featured artists include Bryn Terfel, Julia Fischer and Lars Vogt, while Semyon Bychkov, Sir Mark Elder, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Edward Gardner, Valery Gergiev and Sir Simon Rattle are among those who conduct more than one orchestra.
  • A new series of Music Intros is introduced as part of Proms Plus, aimed at adults who may be coming to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms for first time.
  • Workshops and 'Come and Sing' events provide more opportunities than ever to participate across the season.
  • The Last Night of the Proms is celebrated with Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms in the Park and more Big Screens around the UK than ever.
  • Katie Derham becomes the new face of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two every Saturday night.
  • For the first time Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Three joins Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One, Two, Four and HD in broadcasting the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms and there's enhanced coverage on TV.
  • A Players' Commentary service joins Maestro Cam and include expert insight into selected Proms via the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Red Button.
  • A Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ database of every Proms programme since 1895 goes online for the first time.
  • A newly launched ticket booking system provides an innovative online Proms Planner.
