1999: Eileen Collins is NASA's first female commander

Eileen Collins, a former US Air Force Colonel who already holds the distinction of being the first woman to pilot the Space Shuttle, becomes the first woman to command a NASA space mission.

Mission Commander Collins and her crew are launching the Chandra X-ray Observatory space telescope from the Space Shuttle Columbia.

When the mission is complete, Commander Collins will become the first woman to land the Space Shuttle.
