1990: First image sent from Hubble Space Telescope

The Hubble Space Telescope sends back its first image on 20 May 1990.

The telescope was launched on 24 April 1990 by the space shuttle Discovery. It had taken 20 years to build, at a cost of $1.55 billion.

Hubble’s first images revealed a tiny error in the manufacture of the telescope’s mirror, which was eventually repaired while in orbit in December 1993.
