1966: First US space probe lands on Moon

The United States landed its first spacecraft on the Moon on 2 June 1966.

The Surveyor 1 spacecraft landed in the Ocean of Storms and began transmitting a series of photographs of the Moon’s surface just over an hour later.

The Soviet Union had achieved the feat four months before with the Luna 9, but delayed the release of photographs.
