Yair Dalal (Israel)
Yair Dalal links on Radio 3: Awards for World Music 2003 profile
nominated by:
Antoinette Fawcett, Ulverston:
'Music is the only language understood by everyone. At a time of increasing political, racial and religious tensions, this artist's musicality, his awareness of tradition, his ability to experiment, and, above all, his work for peace through his giftedness would make him an ideal choice for the Â鶹ԼÅÄ World Music Audience Award this year.'
Aida Micaheli, Israel:
'His music is like a dream, he plays the oud, violin & viola with the touch of a master.'
Amos Michaeli, Israel:
'Virtuosity and sensitivity are brought up together by Dalal's music to make me captivated in a dreamlike journey.'
Gilad Sheba, Israel:
'A real original musician. His musical skills vary from classical European music in jazz, rock, blues and Arabic classical music. His background as one of the latest representatives of Arab Jewish music from Iraq, has allowed him to develop this rare mix of traditional modern, Jewish and Arab, Oriental and Western. His great talent is exemplified in his rare mixture combining these often-conflicting trends. In the music of Dalal, these often-dissonant musical styles resonate peacefully and celebrate the ethnic traditions in which they are rooted.'
Zvulun Shalev, Australia:
'I've followed his work for many years and I do love his work all along this period. He's done a lot to bring the old Iraqi music into the front line again with a lot of respect to the 'old school'. In addition Yair raised his voice for peace and has done a lot to promote this issue, starting with recordings at Oslo with Palestinian musicians and all the way with other Arab and Beduinian ones. Yair , great violin and oud player exposed many
listeners to Iraqi/Persian/Baduinian music and all that with a lot of talent and sensitivity. He's my man whenever I miss the desert wind and sound of camels crosing the dunes. Yairs latest album , Asmar, is a masterpiece mixing Iraqi Morocan and Persian music and what a joy it brings to my ears every time over an over. Thanks Yair.'
