Awards for World Music 2003 profile

nominated by:

Sara Davis, Derby:
'Got their latest album for Christmas!! What an earful of sound that invites dreaming. Best prezzie I got!!'

Susie Seui, Derby:
'Dynamic, with a sound that is as big as the Pacific from where they come. This group is truly international and crosses all boundaries! Highly recommend them!'

Jenny Newell, London:
'Their positive Pacific energy, warmth and rhythm make them irresistible.'

John Taupe, New Zealand:
'Their live performances are second to none. I have had the pleasure in attending two of their concerts, both of which have blown me away. An original sound, and beats of the pacific which I have noticed other pacific musicians following. Lovely Music, lovely songs, & lovely people.'

S.McKee, New Zealand:
'Pacific Rhythms and harmonies and exhuberant danve music with intelligent human lyrics telling the stories of Tokelau, and pacific life and history. Handsome, fine dancers, just deliciously good world music.'

Carolyn Godfrey, Leicester:
'An inspirational sound - just what is needed in the middle of an English winter!'

Neil Faamatala So'onalole, Apia Samoa:
'They performed in my country, Samoa, last year. This was their first ever tour to Samoa. Their performance was electrifying and the whole of Samoa missed them when they left. The band leader, Opetaia Foa'i resided at my village of Alamagoto before migrating to New Zealand. Te Vaka truly deserve to be nominated for this years World Music Awards.'

Christina Paopao, Hawaii:
'These artists not only bring the South Pacific to life, but I can feel the music in my heart just as well!'

Susan Mann, USA:
'Love their music. Have used it for my dance class and I have all their CD's. They are so inovative.'

Cal Koat, Canada:
'The great Quincy Jones has said that the next big wave in world music will come from Pacifica. Te Vaka is the crest of that wave. Roiling rhythms and heavenly voices combine to make a sound as sweet and warm as a tropical breeze.'

Susan Barr, Dublin:
'A most original sound from a super band of musicians and artists. Played on Rhythms Round the World - Jazzfm Radio.'

Toni C. Miquel, Brazil:
'I have followed them since their very first CD and tournées in Europe and North America and now they are best in the world in their class. I am very happy with this since I love Tokelauans and their history. I only hope now they find their way to perform here, in Brazil.'

Denise Murphy, Australia:
'The drumming; it's sensational. I also think their music is very clever. I love the layers and the way they build up the music in order to build the theme. Think they are simply fabulous.'

Maima Koro, Fiji:
'I just love the vibrant mixture of Pacific beat in the Te Vaka sounds. It portrays the endless romantic mysticism and exoticism of the Pacific region - very communal and so alive. '

Richard Dinnen, Australia:
'They are entertainers -- their songs and performances are always a delight. And they deliver a genuine flavour of life in the Pacific, that goes beyond the romantic notions of posters in travel agents windows. They've brought new life to an old language and culture, and have done a lot to renew pride and interest in South Pacific music among communities in the Pacific, and way beyond. I hope they keep going forever! '

Aleid Smid, Holland:
'They are the most creative and happy group I've seen in the last 3 years. They make traditional music interesting for a young audience. Their performance is a pure show and teaches us a lot about their culture!'

Art Ladd, Canada:
'Bbeautiful and incredibly unique fusion of contemporary and traditional Maori/Polynesian music.'

Neil Byl, USA:
'Infectious music that grabs your soul and takes control of your feet. It is immpossible to prevent an outbreak of dancing when listening to their music. What a joy to hear them!'

Ash, Herts:
'Original, fresh and exciting - this band brings the warmth and vibrancy of the South Seas to those of us unable to experience it directly.'

Fergus Bisset, Edinburgh:
'I am nominating them as they represent the spirit of the Pacific with their bold rhythms and superb acoustic harmonies. Also, through Opetaia Foa'i's lyrics they express global and regional concerns, keep alive their heritage and give an often overlooked corner of the world a strong voice on the international music scene.'

Laury Dizengremel, East Grinstead:
'This are the most awesome world music band - not only because of their fantastic musicality and original sound but also because of their brilliant stagecraft.'

Dave Thompson, Middlewich:
'I've been the organiser of the Middlewich Folk & Boat Festival, Cheshire from the beginning in 1990. Te Vaka's performance at our millennium festival in 2000 was simply the most awesome live show we have ever experienced. Can't wait to welcome them back in June.'

Marcus Pelto, Samoa:
'I have lived here in Samoa now for four months (I am palagi Australian). When I first heard Te Vaka it was a revelation. It's like listening to the Pacific Ocean. And the music is so infectious I just want to grab a fafine and dance whenever I hear it!'

Christina Patii, New Zealand:
'Because they are the first band in a long time that can still make my Nana get up and shake them hips!'

Ruta Galo, New Zealand:
'My cousin Joe who has just recently joined this group has been impressed and very encouraged to see the morals this particular group has held for their musicians. This cousin of mine has been exposed to many other groups where he has seen drugs and alcohol drastically used within various groups and has actually riuned many of our young artists here in N.Z. Obviously I am not one to bring down anyone who is out there to do well by using their God given talents but if there are groups or agents who are out for themselves but are introducing our young artists to drugs then I feel we need to put a stop to all this. Praise God my cousin has not joined a group such as that. Really my whole point is that this Te Vaka band portrays the best in our polynesian people...good health, morals and most of all, the mixed races they have within their band encourages the rest of us to become one.'

Andy Breen, Aberystwyth:
'Marvellous stuff - this really is the big music. The best music for a cold morning that I've heard in years, and a wonderful combination of sound.'

Deutsch N. Puu, Hawaii:
'Their natural instruments soothe my soul, they can get you hyped and amped up, then with those sweet voices they can massage your inner emotions, they're just totally spellbinding. Let me tell you a true story.. I am a Seargent in the U.S. Army and a couple of years ago I was deployed to Kosovo, after a hard day of work, me and a group of about eight or nine soldiers retreated to our quarters to rest and prepare for the next day of hard work, all of a sudden one of the soldiers puts in a CD that was sent to him by his family, it was Te Vaka, now the funny thing about it was he was the only one who understood anything they were singing about, but the beauty of their music totally caught everybody in a trance. Te Vaka is an Inspiration to my life.'
