TerraFolk (Slovenia)
Terra Folk on the web:
nominated by:
Lawrence Waterman, London:
'Their gigs at the 2002 Edinburgh Festival were a great demonstration of how to generate a brilliant atmosphere from eclectic music. They play in a lively way, at the crossroads not only of Eastern and Western Europe - but also at the junction of classical, folk, jazz and pop. And its great fun.'
Rodger Molyneux, Carshalton:
'Superb virtuosity mixed with a cascade of humorous musical references. A real joy to listen to. They prove you can be dedicated to your music without being too "serious".'
Rowena Parsons, London:
'Heard them on the New Year's Day programme and they and their audience filled me with joy!'
Mauricia Cebulec, London:
'I heard them on your programme on the 01/01/03. They made me smile for the rest of the day. I hope the spell lasts for the rest of the year... Pure fun.'
Kate Hill, London:
'I was driving quite a long trip, rather bored and turned on Radio 3 - on World Music Day! One of the first things I heard was this group - I thought they were exciting, fun, clever - and amazing musicians. I want to hear more of them.'
Ed Sayers, London:
'Driving along on New Year's Day. Never listen to Radio 3. Will now. Their track Veintemille was so good to drive to that we had to carry on pretending in the car after we'd parked. Absolutely brilliant.'
Liz Wragg, Falmouth:
'I heard them on New Years Day on Radio 3 and loved the music and the enthusiasm. The programme is a real treat and TerraFolk were the highlight for me.'
Brian McCluskey, Edinburgh:
'I saw them on their opening night at the Edinburgh festival and then returned on three other occasions before travelling down to London to see them at The Borderline in December. Amazing musicians with a sense of humour and a total joy in performing. I haven't seen anything as good for years.'
Francis Marks, Epsom:
'This band are well known in Britain but also all over Europe for doing something unique - making Folk music cool and sexy. I even headbanged at one of their gigs!'
Fiona Robertson:
'Ridiculously talented, incredibly sexy, side splittingly funny, completely unique and without doubt the best band I've ever seen! Even if the music wasn't half as good as it is those haircuts certainly deserve an award.''
Petar:
'I saw them for the first time in Borderline and I still have a big smile on my face. Pure joy. I challenge anybody not to like them... and that goes for any genre music fans.'
Boris Cerni, London:
'I attended their gig at Borderline in London and I was amazed that a bunch of musicians can create such a wonderful and overwhelming atmosphere. I am sure they could fill a footbal stadium, if enough people knew about them. Everybody who wants to have fun and enjoys "different", but familiar sounds should definitely go to their concert.'
Emily Milnes, London:
'I first saw them at Midnight on their last night at the Edinburgh Festival and knew I was on to something good when the audience sang them onto the stage. I had thought I'd get away with tapping my feet in a sedate & sleepy manner... No chance.'
Andrew Carter, London:
'A bunch of exceptional and eccentric musicians with an encyclopaedic range of styles, Terra Folk never fail to leave me wondering why they aren't much, much better known. They're funky, funny and frantic, racing across the musical landscape and never putting a foot wrong. To be this entertaining is in itself a rare achievement, but to possess such mesmerising talent is practically dangerous.'
Eileen O'Reilly:
'Had to see them a second time and bring all the friends to their Party Gig at last year's Fringe. Two of the best nights of the whole festival. Execellent musicians, great performers.'
Claire Brady, Edinburgh:
'The best thing to hit the Edinburgh festival in years as these guys are real Masters of their Art. The first and only gig I've been to where the audience literally throws their underwear at the performers who then proceed to play fantastic music with "ladies pants" on their head or whilst they are lying on their backs being carried by the audience. Come back to Scotland guys - we love you!'
Alan Flowers, Surbiton:
'First saw and was enthralled by them at their roof-raising, foot stomping Edinburgh Fringe Performance of late night fast moving humour and virtuoso musical performance. After the performance their CD was a "must-have"! My most memorable band discovery of 2002, and great to see them recognised by Radio 3. Musical heroes of the New Europe, neither East nor West but simply and magnicently European!'
Susan Coffey, London:
'I had the pleasure of meeting these divine gentlemen before a London gig late last year. Not only were they charming and fascinating to talk to, but they then sauntered up on stage and gave me the ride of my life! They deserve recognition, and some form of funding so they can continue to share their eclectic and energetic mix of folk music with more appreciative listeners.'
Aet Süvari, Estonia:
'I stumbled upon Terra Folk incidentally on the Edinburgh fringe as they were giving a little concert on the street... saw them later playing in a festival venue, turned out to be an absolute highlight of the whole festival. An experience that both I and my boyfriend enjoyed to an extent! ("No mean feat," is what my boyfriend said about us agreeing on something from the category of "music"!).'
Rainey Lacey, USA:
'Terrafolk is a group of Musicians that know how to put on a good show. They don't need anything flashy to impress the audience - it is simply their personalities and love of music that inspires the audience to dance and sing and clap with just their fingertips. Their passion and talent for music shines through their songs. Whether it is harmonizing with two penny whistles played through the nose or playing the violin while an audience memeber holds the bow, these guys will always keep you guessing - and wanting MORE! They know what their audience wants and can rock out till three a.m. I hope to get the opportunity to see these guys again - COME TO AMERICA!'
Laurel Stevens, Glasgow:
'Absolutely stunning show at Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It started at 12:30 a.m. and I was tired to start with and hoping it wouldn't go on too late. By by 2 a.m. when it finished I was exhilerated and wanted it to go on and on. Felt like a thrilling discovery.'
Naomi Edwards, Australia:
'They made the Edinburgh Festival for me. Stunning musicians, they possess a supreme talent to work a crowd into a frenzy with their mix of traditional folk, hunmour and a spirit that is so electric and contagious that you smile for days after sharing an evening with these boys. I saw them almost every night of their three week run at the Edinburgh Festival. If there was any doubt of their versatility as musicians, it was quickly eliminated when they played with Aussie hiphop/jazz/reggae band the Cat Empire. Memorable.'
Tamara Kurey, USA:
'I saw them play at Covent Garden in London last Spring. That bald lead singer has an awesome voice, is quite a hottie, and really got me excited when he played the penny whistle with his nose. They really know how to work a crowd.'
Owen Lewis, London:
'After seeing and hearing the band you cannot help but grin at the mere mention of their name. They are fantastic entertainers and can enliven a crowd without sacrificing their incredible musical talent. They are truly wonderful. They deserve great success for their irrepresible wit, energy and inventiveness. A friend recommended them to me and I, in turn, have told everyone I know about them. They're a treat not to be missed.'
Arthur Fuxache, Lingfield:
'I saw them at Glastonbury playing in the Green Futures Field. They had the comatose hippy audience doing cartwheels by the end of their set. They got four encores, it was a riot. I bought both their CD's. Why doesn't some imaginative record company sign these boys?'
Steve Gardner, Sanderstead:
'I nearly didn't listen to this part of the Radio 3 programme, because I feared they'd be thigh slapping, accordion playing yodellers. I am really glad I did listen and was amazed at Terrafolk's skill, combination of seemingly uncombinable styles and sheer, unadulterated fun. I'm now off to seek their CD(s).'
Karel, London:
'Heard them last year and their unique mix of balkan, gypsy, and jewish music really made a great gig. They are pure musicians and entertainers and are able to show with their music the feel of what Slovenia is about. Nice to see that everyone else can enjoy the the DJ's of folk music.'
