Julian Warburton

Percussion final

As a soloist, collaborator and conductor Julian has become synonymous with music of the late 20th and 21st Century. He has earned an indisputable reputation for his versatility, technical virtuosity and clarity of interpretation.

Julian has performed world-wide as a soloist with numerous ensembles and orchestras and frequently features on radio both in the UK and abroad, recently performing the world premiere of a new percussion concerto Heartland by Mark Bowden with the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ National Orchestra of Wales, subsequently recorded for NMC.

He has developed a close working relationship with many composers, notably Thomas Adès, Harrison Birtwistle, Gerald Barry, Julian Anderson, Mark-Anthony Turnage and Oliver Knussen. He features on two of their recent recordings – The Importance of Being Earnest by Gerald Barry and Benjamin Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, conducted by Knussen.

Since 2000 Julian has been a principal player with Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, an ensemble with which he has performed countless world premieres, made numerous award-winning recordings and played critically acclaimed concerts throughout the UK, Europe, the US and Mexico.

Julian studied Performance, Conducting and Composition at the University of Huddersfield before going on to study at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where he is now Professor of Percussion and Director of Ensemble.
