The Cod Wars

In late 1975 and 1976, Iceland and Britain were locked in the third cod war. The Icelandic government wanted to extend the fishing exclusion zone around their coastline to limit fish caught by trawlers from other countries. The British government refused to recognise the legitimacy of their claim and British trawlers continued to fish in the lucrative waters around Iceland. Months of increasingly tense skirmishes between the Icelandic coastguard and the British trawlers followed. Tom Watson joined the fishing industry at fifteen years old and rose quickly through the ranks to become skipper at just twenty-three.
He spoke to Witness about that tumultuous time.
