Soundtrack (pt 4/4) - Thematic development in music for film
A composer discusses the uses of musical devices in composition for film. Working with a trio of orchestral players, the composer creates a short theme which can be transformed in different ways to convey a range of moods and feelings. A phrase of falling notes is used to convey sadness. This turns upwards to express happiness. The strongest emotional point of the film, one of loneliness, is effectively highlighted by stripping the texture down to a solo instrument.
