Reflections on jazz improvisation
Jazz musician Courtney Pine compares improvisation in jazz with conversations between strangers who share the same language. He refers to improvisation opportunities in other styles and genres such as the use of cadenzas in classical music. He says that it is not just the soloists in a jazz ensemble who are improvising. Those providing the accompaniment are also constantly improvising.
