Lake fly blow-out
Emerging from their larvae and taking to the air lake flies begin to swarm. Each cloud of flies rising above the lake may contain as many individuals as there are people on the planet, and every one of them is trying to find a mate. After mating they usually fall back to the water, lay their eggs and die, but sometimes it's a different story. Strong winds blow the flies away from the lake and on to dry land, where they fall to the ground in their millions. They may only be the size of a mosquito, but they are packed full of protein and make an easy feast for the mongoose mob. The flies that attracted to lodge lights form a carpet of dying insects which the mongoose family are more than happy to clean up in an all you can eat buffet opportunity.
