In perfect synchronisation four pregnant females from the Banded Brothers mongoose group head into the den to give birth. Waiting outside are the rest of the family: fathers, brothers cousins and pups relax in the peace and quiet - something they won't have much of in the foreseeable future. Called out of their slumber by the cries from the females inside the den, the males go in to investigate. Inside is a magical scene - 12 tiny, fragile babies have been born to the four females of the family. Their eyes are still firmly shut and so for a week or two they will remain inside the den, tended by babysitters and suckled communally by the new mothers.
