Fresher's fun

Fresher's society fun with listener Emily on her first day at Plymouth uni.

So you're just starting Uni. Sure, it's scary and exciting, but don't presume your chosen subject will be your actual job in three years time. These famous faces thought that at one point and look how their lives turned out...

1. John Legend studied English and African-American Literature

He may have been the recipient of an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and almost a dozen Grammys, but Mr. Ledge was offered a place at Harvard and a scholarship to Georgetown University. He eventually attended the University of Pennsylvania before turning into one of the planet's biggest singer-songwriters.

2. Chris Martin got a First Class Honours degree in Ancient World Studies

Maybe we should be grateful Coldplay songs are written in English, because while Chris Martin has a degree in Greek and Latin, ours is pretty rusty. He was studying Ancient World Studies at University College London when he met the boys who he would form the band with.

Bastille's Dan Smith got his degree in English Literature

Dan from Bastille is one of British pop's best songwriters and he also has the best quiff in music. But he once applied those talents to something much more academic: an English degree. Perhaps it was studying the classics that gave him such a way with words.

Tom Hiddleston has a Double First in Classics

Tom's upbringing was privileged to say the least. At Eton by the age of 13, he went on to the University of Cambridge, where in his second year his thirst for acting took hold, as he appeared in A Streetcar Named Desire.

Bake Off's Sue Perkins was an English student

Sue graduated with an English qualification in 1991 from New Hall at prestigious Cambridge, before TV came calling for the quirky cake-admirer.

JK Rowling got her degree in French and Classics

She may be world famous for creating a little known wizarding franchise by the name of Harry Potter and worth a billion pounds, but the writer was turned away from Oxford and instead undertook her studies at Exeter University.

Kourtney Kardashian has a degree in Theatre and Spanish

No one tends to bring up education when they're chatting about the Kardashians but that's a little unfair, as the family clearly have A LOT of smarts. Kourtney may have a degree but her acting skills have come in super handy for life as a reality TV star. Which is definitely never staged. Ever.

Mel Giedroyc did a course in Italian Language and Literature

The other half of The Great British Bake Off presenting duo, Mel Giedroyc, got a 2:2 from Cambridge, and is also where she met presenting buddy and BFF Sue.

The Inbetweeners star Simon Bird did English

Simon, who plays hapless Will in The Inbetweeners (second from left) went to Cambridge to read English before he joined the popular Channel 4 show.

Natalie Portman got a Psychology degree from Harvard

Natalie is one of Hollywood's smartest stars. She missed the premiere of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace to study for her high school finals before going on to Harvard. "I'd rather be smart than a movie star," she once told New York Post and then immediately proved she could be both.

11. Emma Watson was an English graduate

What's the best thing you can do at the height of fame? Duck out of the spotlight and go back to school, according to Emma Watson who did just that after the Harry Potter movie series came to an end. Albeit with a bit of acting and modelling on the side, which took her longer than most to complete her studies.
