Obama

Marking his first year in office, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two presents three films offering intriguing insights into Barack Obama's presidency.

Obama's America

Following his series The American Future – A History, broadcast on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two in 2008, historian Simon Schama returns with Obama's America, two films considering the daunting challenges facing the president both on the world stage and at home, where he must tackle a reeling economy. Having first explored the twin pillars that sustained "the American Century", Simon Schama now seeks an understanding of what is at stake for the future.

Storyville – By The People: The Election Of Barack Obama

In By The People – The Election Of Barack Obama, a film for the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's international documentary strand Storyville, young film-makers Amy Rice and Alicia Sams present a captivating account of the man behind the public persona.

For four years Amy and Alicia were given unprecedented access to Obama's campaign, observing everything from the harsh reality of politics, including his bitter battle with Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination, to tender moments with his wife and kids. Shot on an extraordinary scale, it's a film that can truly be said to capture history in the making.

God Don't Live Here Anymore?

In God Don't Live Here Anymore? theologian and writer Dr Robert Beckford journeys into heartland America to investigate the impact of Barack Obama, both as a politician and as a believer. In spite of the First Amendment, which ensures the separation of Church and State, Robert reveals why religion has and continues to be so important in American politics. He attempts to discover what President Obama means for both the "Religious Right" and the new "Evangelical Left" and, while investigating Obama's background in Chicago, he reveals what bearing the Social Gospel of Black Liberation Theology has had on Obama's religious beliefs, and how this informs his politics.

Ultimately Robert asks whether President Obama can hold his moderate line or succumb to the forces of religious reaction.

Welcome To Lagos

With more than half the world's population now living in cities, human beings have become an urban species. This three-part observational documentary series explores life in one of the most extreme urban environments on the planet – Lagos, Nigeria.

Considered by some to be an apocalyptic vision of the urban future, Lagos is the fastest growing megacity in the world. These films reveal a different side to life there, focusing on the humanity, resourcefulness and compassion of the people who live and work in some of the roughest parts of town. Stylistically bold, the series is narrated by the city itself.

The programmes were filmed in the city's rubbish dump, where 5,000 people live off the waste that others have discarded; in Makoko, a floating slum where 300,000 people live on the water; and in the squatter camps on the beach, where the residents are constantly under threat of forcible eviction. But throughout, the humour, energy and resilience of the Lagosians shines through.

The Conspiracy Files – Osama Bin Laden: Dead Or Alive?

The Conspiracy Files – Osama Bin Laden: Dead Or Alive?

The Conspiracy Files examines what has happened to the world's most wanted man, Osama Bin Laden.

Since 9/11, the US Government has spent billions of dollars on the search for Bin Laden. Yet, for all its spy satellites, unmanned drones, crack commandos and $25m in reward money, the world's greatest superpower has been unable to hunt down one unusually tall, middle-aged and possibly frail man.

Rooted in the facts surrounding Bin Laden's disappearance, and the continuing threat of al-Qaeda, The Conspiracy Files examines popular theories accounting for him evading capture. It also examines claims that his video messages have been faked. Since 9/11, Bin Laden has issued more than 30 audio and video messages, including one as recently as September 2009, but since 2001 only two have contained messages in which he can actually be seen speaking; the last of these was in 2007. One of the theories examined is whether Osama Bin Laden is actually still alive.
