Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms 2009: leading musicians join young talent for biggest ever Proms, Friday 17 July-Saturday 12 September – Proms in the Park

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms

Saturday 12 September – Buile Hill Park, Salford; Glasgow Green, Glasgow; Hillsborough Castle, County Down; Hyde Park, London; Singleton Park, Swansea.

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms in the Park brings the magic of the Last Night of the Proms to tens of thousands of people throughout the UK in five large-scale outdoor shows in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each event is centred on a live concert, with its own high-profile artists, orchestra and presenters, culminating in a live link-up to the Royal Albert Hall for the traditional festivities rounding off the world's biggest music festival. As ever, crowds are encouraged to bring picnics and flags, to sing along and enjoy the music and fireworks.

Proms in the Park moves to two new venues in 2009: Buile Hill Park in Salford and the grounds of Hillsborough Castle in County Down, Northern Ireland. Proms in the Park in Buile Hill Park consolidates the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's relationship with Salford City Council and continues the tradition of Proms in the Park in the North-West of England. Hillsborough Castle is the official residence of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and home to the royal family on its visits to Northern Ireland. The Proms in the Park concert provides a rare opportunity for the public to enter the grounds of such a historic venue.

The highly successful mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins performs for the first time at the Hyde Park event, Welsh soprano Elin Manahan Thomas appears in Singleton Park, and golden flautist Sir James Galway and violinist/former Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Young Musician of the Year Nicola Benedetti will be making homecoming visits to Northern Ireland and Scotland respectively.

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Television and Radio 2 favourite Sir Terry Wogan will be in Hyde Park again to oversee the festivities there, and Noel Thompson presents the show from Hillsborough Castle. A huge variety of other music stars and groups will also be involved around the country, and esteemed conductors Martin Yates (Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Concert Orchestra), Grant Llewellyn (Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ National Orchestra of Wales), Wayne Marshall (Ulster Orchestra), Stephen Bell (Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Philharmonic) and Robert Ziegler (Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scottish Symphony Orchestra) lead the musical festivities.

The expanding programme of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Big Screens takes Proms in the Park even further around the country including Bradford (Centenary Square), Bristol (Millennium Square), Cardiff (The Hayes), Derby (Market Place), Hull (Queen Victoria Square), Leeds (Millennium Square), Liverpool (Clayton Square), Manchester (Exchange Square), Middlesbrough (Centre Square), Norwich (Chapelfield Plain), Plymouth (Armada Way), Portsmouth (Guildhall Square), Rotherham (All Saints Square), Swansea (Castle Square), Swindon (Wharf Green), Waltham Forest (Walthamstow Town Square) and other UK cities where new screens are currently being commissioned.

NS&I (National Savings and Investments), the government-backed savings and investments provider, is supporting the Proms in the Park events at all five venues. Tim Mack, Head of Marketing and Communications at NS&I, states: "We are delighted to support the Proms in the Park events for the fourth time. The events have been a huge success and we look forward to a spectacular evening with some of today's best musical talent."
