Groundwork Coventry & Warwickshire have secured funding from the SRB (Single Regeneration Budget) for a long-term programme of arts and media activities for communities in Foleshill and Longford.

Two arts development officers, Fiona Henderson and Saskia Watkin, have been appointed to oversee the project. They aim to direct the delivery of programmes with artists and community groups.

Fiona and Saskia have so far hosted two public meetings for artists on 24 October and 19 November. Don't worry if you missed them, there will be other chances to air your views at later meetings and events.

As a result of these meetings and further work with artists and residents a series of preliminary actions have been decided upon. So far these are:

Arts taster courses
Taster courses will be run in the new year in conjunction with City College, these will allow anyone living in Foleshill and Longford to sample a range of arts and crafts activities at an introductory level.

Community samba and choir
The team is setting up a community samba band and a community choir, with a view to performing at local events. There will also be a young persons music project happening in the new year involving people from both the Longford and Foleshill community.

Public art
People have told the team they would like to see more public art in the area and so Groundwork are currently investigating the opportunities for funding a mural at the Ukrainian Association in Leicester Causeway.

What is the Single Regeneration Budget?

The Single Regeneration Budget is government money earmarked for the regeneration of this area.

Groundwork are using that money to offer a small block grant scheme to artists and community groups as well as to develop markets, audiences and long-term strategies for continued growth of arts practise in Foleshill and Longford.

Project aims

Fiona and Saskia have already set themselves some aims to get the project off the ground. These include:

路 Contact practising artists, craftspeople, community artists and community groups in the area
路 Identify opportunities for people to participate in the arts
路 Find out what kinds of arts activities are already taking place
路 Find suitable venues for project work with communities
路 Set up a communication network, website, and "skills bank" for arts activities
路 Develop audiences for the arts
路 Provide support to community groups who want to be involved in arts activities
路 Provide advice and support to community groups and artists looking to raise funding for their ideas
路 Set up a steering group to advise on the development of future projects and initiatives
路 Secure further long term funding for arts-based activities in Foleshill and Longford
路 Find out what projects people would like to see happening in the area

Get involved

Groundwork have been busy establishing links with other agencies, artists and religious/residents' groups.

There will be more meetings for artists who have an idea they wish to develop, who are interested in applying for funding or who wish to find out more information on personal development and training.

As the project develops we will have updates here of how you can get involved and have your say on how you would like the project to develop.
