Newquay Championships

Falmouth Ladies' A have won the Newquay Championships. Runners up were Caradon in second place and Roseland in third. Nicola Davey from Caradon Ladies writes about the championships in her regular Â鶹ԼÅÄ diary.

Newquay rowing club hosted another fantastic ladies championships this year and, despite the sea mist rolling in on Saturday morning, everything ran like clockwork.

After a slightly delayed start, the first two rounds were run on Saturday leaving just 24 crews to fight it out in the quarter finals on Sunday morning. Both our Ladies A & B crews made it through to the quarters but sadly, after two fantastic races our Ladies C crew got knocked out.Ìý

Newquay Championships

This year, the Junior Championships were also run on the Sunday making for a pretty full racing timetable. The junior crews kicked off the racing and, despite a great effort from our crew, they were knocked out in the quarter finals.Ìý

By mid morning it was the ladies crews turn to take to the water for the quarter finals, we had been drawn in the first race which we went on to win.ÌýThe Ladies B crew had been drawn in a good heat and put in an excellent performance but unfortunately their heat was one of the slowest so they just missed out on getting through to the semi finals as a fastest loser.Ìý

There is always one 'bad' semi and this year we were drawn in it having to race Roseland, Charlestown, Mounts Bay, Newquay and Cattewater. We had a fantastic start which set us up to win the race meaning we were automatically through the final.Ìý What a relief that was.

All the crews that should have made it there did, making for an exciting finale for what had been a cracking weekend. Lining up for the final alongside us were Falmouth A, Newquay A, Mounts Bay A, Padstow A and Roseland A.Ìý We had drawn our own boat, Ann Glanville, in berth one.Ìý

Celebrations

Toasting their success

The period in between the semi's and the final is awful. The nerves try to take over, you try your best to control them but they just won't go away.ÌýWalking down to the boat seems to take me forever, my oar suddenly weighs a tone and everything becomes a blur. Despite all of that, as soon as we rowed out of the harbour entrance, I knew we were ready for it, ready to give it everything we had.

We had another amazing start and us and Falmouth pulled away. We managed to hold the rest of the pack behind us and turned the first buoy in second place behind the mighty Falmouth ladies who went on to win the championship with us finishing in second place with Roseland in third followed by Mounts Bay, Newquay and Padstow.Ìý

I cannot put into words how happy we were with our result – there were screams, tears, hugs, kisses and lots of smiles in our boat once we crossed that line. I felt relieved and extremely proud that we'd got the result we'd been longing for. It's amazing what seven people can achieve when they work as a team.Ìý

The Caradon Crew

Members of the Caradon Crew

I'd like to thank everyone that supported us over the weekend, and to say an extra special thank you on behalf of the crew to the one person who has given us more time than you could ever expect anyone to give, our fantastic coxswain, Steve Kent – THANK YOU!Ìý Huge congratulations to all our crews, we couldn't have asked for better results to finish what has been a truly 'oarsome' season for the club.Ìý

The sad part is that the season is nearly over.ÌýThat means all sorts of horrible things like getting back on the dreaded rowing machine, and spending hours out in a cold wind tunnel doing annual maintenance to our gigs.ÌýThe winter is also time for us to try to raise some more funds for the club, to enable us to remain competitive, and to develop up our junior section next season, both of which requires new kit and equipment.

But we've got a couple of weeks to go before we need to start thinking about all that.Ìý It's the Men's Championships on the 22 and 23 September.ÌýI'm coxswaining the Men's C crew, think I'm just as nervous about that as I've been about racing this weekend.

Over to you boys…
