DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS.

Chris Evans | 15:16 UK time, Wednesday, 19 March 2008

Two men, two women - same story. Both the blokes in their forties, the women...

...one a mum, the other a wife.

The same guy as yesterday - his mum has gone away for two weeks, so this morning he pipes up,

"Gonna have to take it easy on the clothes front ?"

"Why ?" asked me and my mum.

"Me muvvers away for two weeks so there's gonna be no laundry done for a fortnight."

Flabber and ghasted, that's what we were. He was dead serious.

"Look, I have no idea how to use a washing machine." The guy is 47 years old.

This reminded me however of an even better story concerning Danny Baker. Danny always used to wear, jeans and big loud shirts, always. The one Friday during the TFI days, he turns up in a suit, quite an old out of date suit. None of us said anything but we all noticed, what on earth was going on with Danny ?

He never said anything, the answer however was several months away.

I was round Danny's house and I happened to recall the story to Wendy, his fantastic wife.

"Oh," she said and burst out laughing. "I'd been in hospital and he was running out of clean clothes so he had to start wearing his suits !"

She then went on to say, if she'd have been in hospital any longer he would have just started buying new clothes until she eventually came out. Hilarious.

A very common story I think CLP.

Mr Debbie lived on his own for about 6 months after the break up of his first marriage. His mother lived 13 doors away and used to do all his washing and ironing. When she was away and he ran out of clean clothes he would go and buy new ones. Even socks!

Pleased to say that I have taught my eldest (16 years old) to change his bed, iron a shirt and use the washing machine. He may not always be pleased about this but think how happy his future wife will be! However, my mother in law thinks that I am wicked. And I don't mean as in wicked, cool.

Don't they say that a wife is supposed to take over from where the mother left off?

Anyhoo, I have a note for my absence...and this is what I've tried to post earlier today for yesterday when all my troubles seemed so far away.

Except to add that the badger now knows where the 'on' switch is for the washing machine. The powder and conditioner may take a little while longer. But as far as the programming goes...2012...not sure if morning or afternoon though...

Wednesday 19/03/08 relating to Tuesday 18/03/08

I 'met' a member of Aswad once. And a certain gold medal winning decathlete.

But that is most definately not for here.

And I may not be here for long either.

I check every day, but computer usually says no. Lets hope this time it's for keeps.

Anyhoo, the badger is still going strong and is mainly brownish black and white stripes, so not sure at all where that leaves me.

Hope all well, and gingembre, I got the message about the search party. I'd just like to say, I looked everywhere.

    Well now that's spooky.

I'm just back from demolishing a pizza with the nightmare cousin Barry, since his long-suffering missus has been called out of town and he is not fit to be left alone with a tin opener.

As some of you may remember, our Baz is the one whose missus was rushed into hospital with severe stomach pains and he rang her on the ward at 6am to ask if he took sugar in his tea. And it gets better.

Recently the aforementioned masochist, Saint Jean, had an operation on her foot and was somewhat incapacitated and in some pain and discomfort. So the morning after her op I rang to see how she was.

    Baz answered.

"Good morning." I chirruped. "And how is the world at T***ty Towers this lovely day?"

    "Not good, actually." Says he.

"Oh no. Why?" I replied, alarmed.

"Well, Jean's late with me breakfast. She had a bit of a problem gettin' up the stairs with the tray on her crutches."

And he wonders why I've never re-married.

Actually, he is still on an ecstatic high from my being marooned, carless and knickerless, in Coventry during the evacuation nightmare caused by the discovery of the unexploded WW2 bomb.

Stranded on the outskirts of Coventry in the pub with my new-found evacuee friends in the Spirit of the Blitz, Baz sent a message.

"All is well, petal. Crisis over, you can return to your hotel." "Hurrah!" I cried, relieved.

Fortunately I continued to read on.. "Call 999, ask for Inspector Richard Head and tell them you need an escort."

I can't tell you what I replied or I'll be smited.

    Men, see. Never grow up.

    Mind you.

It's not just the chaps who can be a bit befuddled on the business end of the laundry.

When our girls were ankle-biters and my sister resumed work at the local Borstal, my mother Renee, a prison-warder in charge of catering at Newgate Prison during the days of the Suffragettes, volounteered to do the ironing for her. Renee would collect the washed laundry and the grateful sister would collect them later, along with the hypered-up, happily exhausted, ice-cream fuelled offspring.

Calling in to see her as she thrashed away with the Morphy Richards, Renee was huffing and muttering away like a bulldog chewing a wasp.

"I don't know what washing powder she's using but these clothes are a disgrace. Look at this shirt. And it smells funny too. Wait while she gets back."

Nevertheless, she continued heroically with the huge pile until it was all finished. When said sister arrived to collect her brood, Renee was ready for her like Florrie Capp.

"Listen here. You and your new-fangled washing machines, they don't do the job proper. In my day we used to put everything in the boil-wash and scrub it, then stick it through the mangle. It's time yous lot did the same."

I wasn't at all sure about you doing the show - in fact I have to admit I complained to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ that the only thing good about it was the signature tune!!!! Now I feel put out when you go on holiday!!

I really enjoy the show. Could we have Office Gossip back again please I miss it!! Really also love the childrens' fanfare.

    Enjoy your Easter break

    Pauline

I wash, hang out to dry and Iron my own clothes but the wife folds them for me to put away as I normally crease then when folding them.

For todays first tune may I suggest David Lee Roth "Just like living in Paradise" Reason for this we have Friday off, Monday off long weekend and a 4 day working week, surely that is just like living in paradise.

Great show to start the weekend

    Hi Chris,

Cannot shout at the men unable to operate the washing machine. It is down to careless upbringing by their mothers. I do not know where the rule is that you teach girls to do everything but the boys just wait for their ladies to do it for them !

Anyway, Happy Easter to you and all.

I would love to hear Summer Breeze by the Isley Brothers please. We can all pretend that the weather is wonderful and springlike !

    Love Carol xx

PS. I have a 11 year old son who can operate every kitchen appliance with his eyes shut !

    Hi

have taught the future husband to wash (he can switch on the machine and drape clothes over clothes horse - still need to work on colous/ whites) and hoover and change the bed (I ahve asthma so it needs to be done properly).

He will even run the hoover round the living area if asked - haven't quite got him to do the bathroom in 5 years but there is still time.

My choice for ARF - just beacuise I want to hear it again - is the Mike Batt song about wanting to be Buddy Holly - sounded great when i heard it yesterday in the morning.

Happy Easter one and all - remember not just about the chocolate :-)

    Cristobal,

First comment on your blog, and it's to offer a rambunctious suggestion for a kicking tune to start off All Request Thursday.

I Put A Spell On You - Screamin' Jay Hawkins.

Quite simply put, if that tune doesn't get people animated and/or laughing their teeth out at the very end, nothing will.

    Rock on,

    Hi everyone

Hazel we've missed you good to hear you are okay.

I'd like a slightly different song for first ART - The Queensbury Rules - have a go hero

I went to hear Martin Simpson last night and was humbled by such a folk star turning out for a small folk club (sold out tickets though) and being a R2 double folk award winner. Full credit to you and a big thank you from Poole.

The Easter weather looks as if its going to be a eyuck time.

I hope everyone has a nice break and I'm off to church on Sunday to say my thankyous and rejoice with the rest of the community.
