1973: British officials shot dead in Bermuda

10 March 1973: Governor of Bermuda Sir Richard Sharples is assassinated.

He and his assistant, Captain Hugh Sayers, are shot dead in the grounds of the governor's residence in Hamilton - the British-dependent territory's only town.

The deaths happen six months to the day after the North Atlantic island's British police chief, George Duckett, was shot dead.
