1949: Lights to return to London after WW2

β€œAll over the country, lettering is being brightened, bulbs replaced, wiring renewed and soon our big cities will be as bright as they were in 1939."

Bomb-scarred London prepares to switch on the lights of signs, billboards and shop windows again after 10 years of darkness that began with the outbreak of war.

The lights were switched on again on the evening of April 2nd, 1949.
