2000: First British women reach South Pole

Catherine Hartley and Fiona Thornewill become the first British women to walk across Antarctica to the South Pole.

Their nine-person group covered 680 miles while withstanding temperatures as low as -48C.

Fiona Thornewill trekked alongside her husband, Mike, becoming the first married couple to achieve the feat.
