1985: Miners call off year-long strike

The National Union of Mineworkers voted in March 1985 for a return to work, ending the miners’ year-long strike without any peace deal over pit closures.

The industrial action began over plans to close up to 20 pits.

The final vote by the union's national executive was close; 98 to 91 for a return to work.
