Jekyll and Hyde

'Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Abridged in 10 episodes and read by John Sessions with Julian Rhind-Tutt as Dr Jekyll and David Shaw-Parker as Dr Lanyon. Consultant: Alison Powell.

This adaptation of 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' uses the original text and is intended for KS3 and KS4 students studying it as a GCSE set text. Each video episode features annotated scrolling text or you can choose to listen to the audio-only version if preferred.

The abridgement includes approximately half of the original text. Transcripts of each episode are available below and on the individual webpages.

Please note: the text includes brief descriptions of violence against a child (Chapter 1, repeated in Chapter 2) and murder (Chapter 4).

Utterson takes a walk with his relative, Enfield, and hears a troubling story from him.

1. Story of the door

Utterson is anxious about his discoveries and decides to intercept Hyde in the street.

2. Search for Mr Hyde

Utterson visits Dr Jekyll and raises the issue of his will and the behaviour of Mr Hyde.

3. Dr Jekyll was quite at ease

There is outrage at the murder of Sir Danvers Carew. Utterson can identify the murderer.

4. The Carew murder case

Utterson visits a depressed Jekyll and is given a letter - apparently written by Hyde.

5. Incident of the letter

Utterson visits Lanyon and finds him on his death-bed, completely estranged from Jekyll.

6. Remarkable incident of Dr Lanyon

Utterson and Enfield encounter Jekyll and are horrified at his changed appearance.

7. Incident at the window

Utterson is summoned to Jekyll's house by Poole, who fears that Hyde has returned.

8. The last night

Utterson reads Lanyon's account of his meeting with a strange messenger sent by Jekyll.

9. Dr Lanyon's narrative

Jekyll's written testimony explains the events and explores the duality of human nature.
