Utterson is surprised to receive a visit from Poole. Jekyll's servant tells the lawyer that he fears his master has gone missing…and has been replaced by some sort of creature who has locked himself in Jekyll's laboratory. Utterson goes with Poole and together they break the door of the laboratory down, but they are too late - the figure in the laboratory has already taken his own life. Utterson returns home with documents that will finally explain the mystery.
