Utterson visits Lanyon and finds him on his death-bed, having apparently suffered a great shock. Lanyon is also completely estranged from Jekyll, saying that he considers his former friend 'dead'. He gives Utterson an envelope containing a second one - to be opened only after the death or disappearance of Jekyll.
