Before watching the video:

  • What comes to your mind when you hear the word pirate?
  • Have you read any books or seen movies about pirates before? Which one was your favourite and why?
  • What would you do if you suddenly found yourself on a pirate ship like Sam?

While watching the video:

  • Pause at 00:51 - What is the name of the pirate ship Sam ends up on?
  • Pause at 02:06 - What do the pirates want to do with Sam when they first see him?
  • Pause at 05:07 - Who is Anjli's favourite character and why?

After watching the video:

  • How do you think Sam felt when the pirates were about to throw him overboard?

  • What do you think the girl's secret could be in the story? How might it change the story?

KS1 and KS2 English Activity Suggestions

  1. Pirates from the Past: Explore the exciting tales of famous pirates and write biographies about the ones pupils find most intriguing. Learn about their pirate-y lives and share with other pupils.
  2. A Day in the Life of a Pirate: Pupils could imagine their day as a buccaneer and write down all the grand adventures they'd have on a pirate ship. Record their tales in a ship's log and let their imagination sail the high seas.
  3. Design Your Pirate Flag: Pupils could create their own pirate flag. Use coloured paper and pens to make symbols that represent their daring pirate spirit. Remember: skulls, crossed swords, treasure chests, waves or a Jolly Roger are classic choices so why not come up with creative ones of your own?
