This why UK Sport invest in support networks. It’s not ideal for an athlete to be thinking how are we going to get down the track, how am I going to start well and oh how am I going to pay for my accommodation, how am I going to pay for that flight, where is the money coming from?

It’s a constant daily battle and that’s not something that they need in their head at this point.

They’ve achieved the best-ever result for British women in the event, but could it have been even higher than eighth if they hadn’t had to rely on crowdfunding to reach the Games?

“I don’t want to say ‘what might have been’ if we hadn’t had our funding taken off us but I was so stressful back then and had a real impact on us,” Mica McNeill tells me.

“It’s been so nice coming here (to the Olympics) and having everything taken care of for us - it’s been great not having to cook our own meals."

Brakewoman Mica Moore adds; “I’m so proud of what we have achieved and I know that with funding support we can be back challenging for a medal in four years time.”

McNeill concludes our chat on 鶹Լ Radio 5 Live by saying; “We want to thank everyone for their support, but we hope we don’t have to ask the people again and that there’ll be funding in the future.”

These are the next generation. To put it in perspective. Mica has a good sled but it’s not compared to the BMWs, the sleds of the Germans. The start is solid but again another four years of training and she’s going to be right up there.

You keep them focused and keep them training, you are always looking at technology, get them more athletic, get them working in the gym.

You give them the training, you give them the knowledge and you improve the equipment - anything is possible.

British pilot Mica McNeill speaking to 鶹Լ Two: "It feels amazing. We are so happy. We have come away with eighth which is more than we could have ever hoped for.

"There's things I am always going to be picky with. We were in the mix yesterday but I'm not comfortable on this track and I made a couple of mistakes. But we have to be happy with that!

"Five months ago we didn't even know whether we would be here. Just to get here is an achievement in itself. It has been incredible.

"We will be back in four years time. I really hope we don't have to ask the people [to fund them] again as great as it has been."

Brake Mica Moore added: "This has been the cherry on top. We have enjoyed it so much. We were told we weren't medal potential so it was nice to show yesterday we are."

The Jamaican team make history as their nation’s first-ever female Olympic bobsleigh team, but know they are better than their 19th place finish suggests.

Pilot Jazmin Fenlator - perhaps alluding to the departure of a coach last week and rumoured political infighting within the Jamaican federation - says they did the ‘best they could’ in the “circumstances here.”

They do though believe their participation here will make a big difference to the future of Winter sport.

“We hope that Caribbean nations start to take the Winter Olympics more seriously and I genuinely believe we’re going to start seeing more girls and boys from here and Africa coming into these Winter sports over the next decade,” Fenlator tells me on 鶹Լ 5 Live.

  20. Lucky 13th for Ryding?published at 13:47 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

    Men's slalom

The startlist has been published for tomorrow's men's slalom and Great Britain's Dave Ryding will be 13th out of the gate.

Skiers prefer the early start numbers so the course doesn't get too churned up but it has been so cold here, the piste should remain firm.

David Yule goes out first and he has Scottish parents, although he himself was born in Switzerland and races for them.

Marcel Hirscher is a strong favourite to win a third gold of the Games, with Norwegian Henrik Kristoffersen aiming to spoil the party.

There are 108 starters, with Great Britain's Laurie Taylor also racing. He's got a start bib of 51.

    Tune in from 0100 GMT.
