    FT: Wales 1-2 Iceland

That's all for our coverage tonight, a disappointing evening for Wales as they suffer relegation from the top flight of the Nations League.

Wales' first campaign at this level has been a brutal reality check at times but, as manager Gemma Grainger says, a useful learning experience for future challenges.

It doesn't get any easier with their final game in Group A3 on Tuesday, when they host former world champions Germany in Swansea.

We'll have live coverage of that one too, so we hope you'll be able to join us again.

Until then, enjoy the rest of your weekends and thanks for your company tonight. Nos da!

It may not have been Wales' night, but it was a night to remember for the players that came before.

It's a hard one to take.

Like Angharad James said, I think they are learning, it's just taking a little longer than we would have hoped.

They are moving forward and creating chances, they're just not able to finish them at the moment.

  4. Wales will get better - Jamespublished at 21:23 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    FT: Wales 1-2 Iceland

Wales midfielder Angharad James: "Emotions are high right now, I think we will be really disappointed with that.

"It was very similar to the first leg when we played them away, we dominated possession but we just weren't good enough with the ball.

"We need to be better, we know that as a group.

"We're playing against high-ranked opposition, there's no easy game in this group, but it's shown a lot of character from us.

"We'll keep building and working hard on the training field and we will get better."

  5. Wales should have had a penalty, says Graingerpublished at 21:18 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    FT: Wales 1-2 Iceland

On the first-half penalty incident involving Jess Fishlock, Wales manager Gemma Grainger told 鶹Լ Match of the Day Wales:

“I’ve watched it back and I think it is a penalty. Yes, I think it would have changed the game.

“But the what ifs are always the things that are the most difficult.”

And so it is relegation for Wales from the Nations League, but context is key here.

    This is far from unexpected.

Germany are currently ranked sixth in the world, Denmark 12th and Iceland 14th.

    Wales are ranked 29th.

This isn't a disaster by any means.

This has been a brutal learning curve for Gemma Grainger's side.

It ends in familiar fashion, lots of play, lots of possession, but punished when the big moments have arrived.

  8. 'We need to be more clinical' - Inglepublished at 21:16 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

Wales captain Sophie Ingle told Match of the Day Wales: “Iceland are a very good side but again we can’t gift them two goals. It’s not good enough at this level.

“But I am really happy that we dug in and kept going until the end.

“First half they had one chance and score, we had six or seven. We are no clinical enough. We need to work on that on the training ground tomorrow because if we want to be at the next level, that’s where we have to go.

“Germany is going to be a tough game. But we just have to test ourselves now. We have got nothing to lose.

“We have to be clinical going forward and more solid defensively.”

  9. Wales boss Grainger calls for perspectivepublished at 21:14 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

Wales manager Gemma Grainger told 鶹Լ Match of the Day Wales: “Let’s be honest, being in League A of the Nations League, we knew we’d be playing against higher-ranked nations.

“We’re the only team in League A that hasn’t been to a major tournament so let’s have some perspective.

“We wanted these games, we knew they were going to be hard. I’m proud of the improvements this team has made.

“Our goal is to qualify for a European Championship. Did League A help us get closer to that? Yes it did.

“This experience ticks off the next stage of the journey for us."

But we just lacked that quality.

  11. FULL-TIME - Wales 1-2 Icelandpublished at 21:07 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

That's it. Wales are relegated from the top flight of the Nations League with one game left.

They had their chances against Iceland, particularly in a first half in which they dominated, but it was ultimately a clinical and highly effective performance from the visitors.

A frustrating and disappointing night for Wales.

  20. Postpublished at 83 mins
